Recent Maildays!

Been a while since I've bought singles off Ebay, but I picked up some nice cards over the week and they've all come in by now! Here's my most recent additions

16-17 Select Tie Dye Prizms Russell Westbrook (#20/25)

If it's Russ and a Prizm parallel, I'm getting it, lol. It's been a rough series for OKC against the Rockets, but regardless of what happens no one can take away the unbelievable season Russ had this year.

13-14 Panini Preferred Manu Ginobili NBA Finals Game Used Jersey  Booklet (#28/99)

Jersey cards might not be what they used to be, but I'm still a sucker for Jerseys that are actually tied to specific games..I'm even more a sucker for cards with swatches of Finals used jersey. The great thing about this card? It was only a little over $6 with shipping. I'll pay those prices all day for Finals jerseys, especially of a future Hall of Famer like Manu

2016 Immaculate Jumbo Patch Walter Payton (#1/5)

I really felt like giving my football collection a boast and picked up 3 nice cards. This is the first of those 3's. The pic doesn't really do this card justice..it's a BEAUTY. Numbered to only 5 copies and also a nice huge jersey swatch with a nice swatch of patch..very awesome card of "Sweetness"

2016 Flawless Dual Patches Gold Ezekiel Elliott/Emmitt Smith (#10/10)

Yeah..I wasn't gonna pass this one. Two dominant running backs from my favorite team. Two nice patches and numbered to only 10 copies..I'll never buy a box of Flawless as it's too rich for my blood but I'll gladly reap the benefits of those who break and sell!

2016 Flawless Patches Gold Tom Brady/Rob Gronkowski (#2/10)

Something about these Flawless patches that just suck me in. I wish the Gronk was a better patch, but hey with that Brady patch, I won't complain too much. Just great looking cards in my opinion!

So yeah..I think my football collection just got a little bit better!

Old School Box Break: 96-97 Topps Series 2 Hobby Jumbo Basketball

Found this box on Ebay and it's the first product I've opened where I can pull rookies of Kobe, Iverson, etc in a lonnnng time so thought it would be a fun break.

What To Look For:   They don't book for much but obviously rookie cards of Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, and Steve Nash lead the way. It's a small 110 set for series 2 so with 40 cards per pack and 12 packs per box, I'm kind of expecting multiple copies of these guys. The NBA@50 foil parallels are one per pack and getting a rookie parallel or MJ would be nice. Insert wise you have Finest and refractor reprints of the top 50 players (no Jordan though) and Mystery Finest/Refractors. Be nice to pull a sweet mystery finest refractor for sure.

So I haven't broken 16-17 product since my god awful Prizm break in November, mainly because of the crap rookie class and no product really seemed worth breaking, until I saw Optic come out. I really liked Optic in Football and so I decided to take a shot and open 2 boxes for basketball. Rookie Autographs
Jaylen Brown

Overall Thoughts: I must say...I was pleasantly surprised..and I'm not just saying that because I pulled two pretty good hits..I say that because I think these cards look damn good, especially the inserts. I love the chrome finish on all the inserts and even better, the color parallels of the inserts just really pop. My first auto in box 1 was lame (I pulled Layman in Prizm too) but pulling the Gold Parallel of the Bird Champ Is Here was awesome and it's a super nice card that looks great in person. I love getting big name inserts and I know they aren't worth much but I don't care..they are cool looking. I pulled 3 different inserts of Russ, and inserts of LeBron, Wade, Anthony Davis etc. I couldn't ask for a better rookie autograph really as Jaylen Brown is probably either the best or tied for the best rookie auto hit of the entire product with Brandon Ingram and Jamal Murray. All in all just a fun break for the price, though there's no way I would break this at over $100 a pop. If you can wait a little bit for it to get back down to $75-$85 range I'd definitely recommend trying it or dabble in some retail as well. Here are pics of the cards.

Old School Box Breaks: 98-99 Upper Deck Series II Basketball Hobby Box

So here we are..the final box in my old school break for the time being. I started doing this with 98-99 Topps Series 2, 4 weeks ago and here we are 4 boxes later with the Grand Finale, and I saved what is for me the best for last. The main reason I wanted to save this for last was because of the tiny microscopic chance I pull one of the greatest cards ever made...the Jordan Autographed Game Used Jersey. Obviously it's 99.9999% doubtful...but just like Lloyd Christmas' chances with Mary Swanson...there's still a CHANCE!! This box would've been easy to flip for at the very least triple what I paid for it..but honestly..I never gave it a single thought to flip...this is a rare chance to bust a box that typically sells high for a super cheap price..isn't that what collecting is all about? I'm a collector first, not a seller, so there was no doubt in my mind I was always going to break this one open. If by any chance I don't get the holy grail...maybe I can get a Game Used Jersey card...I'd love to pull one from a time when these things were considered holy grail pulls themselves. It really makes me laugh how card companies took something so innovative and desirable and ran it to the ground to the point that 95% of jersey cards are considered as desirable as base cards.

What To Look For: Well obviously the big chase is the Jordan Autograph Game Jersey card, but also regular game used jersey cards. The funny thing, the rookie jersey set is harder to pull (1:2500 packs) but if you don't hit like Vince Carter, it kind of sucks..I'd much rather hit the easier to find jersey cards of veteran players (1:288). Outside of that, rookies are seeded 1:4 packs. Obviously the big rookie hits are of Vince, Dirk, and Paul Pierce. There are UD Exclusive parallels numbered to 100. Also you have serial numbered parallels of the Next Wave, MJ23, and Super Power inserts, so any superstar parallels would be awesome.

Alrighty..here it is...the final break!

So remember that 98-99 was a lockout shortened season which means that anything released before the lockout ended had 0 rookies (some had redemptions for rookies, some products had nothing at all). SPX Finite was one of those products so what UD did was make a special rookie update set and inserted 2 card packs into hobby boxes of 98-99 UD Series 2. It's a nice little bonus that adds some value to the box, especially if you pull the right rookies. They are serial numbered as well, which I believe makes them the first basketball rookie cards to be serial numbered since these came out before SP Authentic, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Anyways, I've always felt these were underrated rookies, but maybe it's because the majority of them are just draft day suit photos and not players in their NBA Uniforms that they aren't as desirable as SP Authentic. Still cool nonetheless and I will start with that pack first.

SPX Finite Rookie Update Pack
Raef LaFrentz (#1536/2500)
Ricky Davis Radiance (#71/1500)

Eh...nothing special here..the Davis is actually a parallel..at the time maybe LaFrentz had initial hobby love due to being the #3 pick overall and coming from Kansas..but that quickly died down.

Now for the break!

Overall Thoughts: So nothing big, but at it's price point very worth it. This box is full of MJ's, whether it be the SP Base Cards (in which you get 6 a box) the MJ insert, the chance at the MJ Autograph game used Jersey, heck even the checklists use MJ's images. If this was 1999, the Pierce and Vince SP rookies would be HUGE PULLS. I actually remember buying the Vince myself at The Dugout for $25. It was fun to pull it and own it again. Inserts of Kobe and TMac are nice, wish the serial numbered parallels were of better players. All in all a fun trip down memory lane but here's the big "but"....there's no WAY I recommend breaking this product at it's current price point on Ebay ($125-$150). I got super lucky to get this for a little over $40 and even then it's not the greatest of breaks return wise. At 3-4 times that price, it's an absolute bloodbath. There are only a few cards that would be able to cover the price of it's current market value. Even pulling game jersey cards wouldn't really get you much as they aren't worth as nearly as much as they used to be 20 years ago. If you can find this in the $75-$80 range..it's worth a shot, but anything over $100 I'd stay away. Here are pics of some of the hits
